ABOUT PROJECT

Originally founded in 700 AD, Coventry Cathedral has been a place of worship and heritage for over 1,300 years.

Perhaps its most defining moment came in the 20th century, when the cathedral was reduced to ruins during the Second World War. Rather than rebuild what was lost, the decision was made to stand the old ruins beside a new vision for the building. Designed by Sir Basil Spence in 1951, the new cathedral was unveiled in 1956.

In 2021 Architectural Bronze came into the story. A new extension was added to the cathedral grounds, and we worked with A&RME Architects, an architectural practice that has a strong focus on conservation and restoration of both modern and historic buildings,.

We were comissioned to add Thermabronze screens and bronze clad doors, carefully designed to fit seamlessly with this Grade I listed building’s distinctive style, while offering the durability and performance needed for contemporary use. A contemporary bead was selected to blend well with both the new extension and the existing structure, maintaining aesthetic continuity across the project. Duplex handles to operate tall opening windows were also added.

The cathedral has been dubbed ‘the nation’s favourite 20th century building.’ Our bronze products are built to last, and now form part of the cathedral’s history for centuries to come.
