A six-story building inspired by 16th-century Scottish Baronial architecture, the John Cunningham Student Centre was designed as a central hub for students and staff, providing essential amenities and support. Paying homage to the college’s Scottish heritage, its impressive scale and grandeur make a striking impression.
Previously, the Stevenson Library, completed in 1988, stood in its place as a stark, block-like structure with a flat roof. However, as it no longer met modern needs, the college sought a replacement that prioritised natural light across all levels, requiring durable windows of the finest quality.
“Collaborating with Architectural Bronze was straightforward, despite the time difference.
The team was always responsive and accommodating to our queries.” - JCA Architects
This grand project features double clad bronze doors leading out to an upper balcony and and array of impressive thermally broken double-height bronze windows with solid bronze panels.
The material selection process was extremely important for this project and began with a lifecycle assessment, focusing on durability, low maintenance, and long-lasting performance. Given that the college oversees several heritage-listed buildings, the design drew inspiration from these structures, selecting sympathetic materials that could be easily maintained for an extended lifespan.
